Stoneco Application: Township Board Finds “Low-to-Moderate” Need
Stoneco Application for 400-acre mine on Pleasant Road:
Township Board Finds “Low-to-Moderate” Need
After receiving additional information from Stoneco, the Board of Trustees found that Stoneco had established a “low-to-moderate” need for the material it wants to mine at the Pleasant Lake site.
What does this mean? This determination will impact the Planning Commission’s (PC) review process during the next phase of Stoneco’s application. In the next phase, Stoneco must prove the proposed mine will not create any “very serious consequences.” Since the township determined that there is a “low-to-moderate” need for the gravel, the PC should apply “moderate-to-high” standards in its review.
It’s now time for the community to become informed so that it can help shape the outcome of the review process. Attend our information event on July 23: How Gravel Mining Impacts Our Community – and Yours
Free. Public Welcome. Family-friendly.
M-52 Mine expansion
The MLB has received updated information from Aggregate Industries and has determined that the applicant has met the criteria to expand the operation of the existing mining sites on M-52. It is our expectation that the MLB will monitor the operation there with vigilance.
NOTE: The MLB’s review of the M-52 used a different process from the PC’s review of the Stoneco application. The M-52 site is already permitted for aggregate mining, and the operator has held a license for a number of years. The Pleasant Lake Road site is not.
