IMPORTANT UPDATES on Stoneco’s application for a 400-acre mine
Important Updates
The Board of Trustees is scheduled to hold a special meeting on Monday, July 17. At the meeting, the Board will discuss Stoneco’s application for a Special Land Use (SLU) permit for a 400-acre mine on Pleasant Lake Road. The meeting follows the Planning Commission’s recommendation to deny the permit.
Some recent relevant updates:
- JUN 13, 2023: The Planning Commission (PC) voted unanimously to recommend the township deny Stoneco’s Special Land Use permit. See the Motion and Finding of Facts. The recommendation will be reviewed at the special meeting of the Board of Trustees on July 17. The Board may agree with the PC’s findings and deny the application OR send it back to the PC for further review, OR approve the application with our without conditions.
- JUL 17, 2023: Stoneco sends the Board a letter offering conditions it will accept a part of obtaining the SLU permit.
- JUL 7, 2023: Sharon Preservation Society sends the Board a memo to notify it of its intent to submit a package of petitions signed by township residents and property owners. The petition signers encourage the Board to “…deny a Special Land Use permit for the proposed mine if it is determined that the mine would create very serious consequences for the township and its residents.”
The memo acknowledges Stoneco’s letter to the township. It suggests, “Unless those conditions realistically eliminate the very serious consequences, the signers of the petition have indicated they encourage the Board to deny the permit.”
